We arrive midday, super jetlagged but super excited about our new adventure. Just checked in to The Club, serviced apartments we booked via AirBnB.
Coastal View from Brickell, Miami Downtown
One of the views from 40th floor of the rooftop of an apartment we checked out while hunting for a place to stay for the year. Imagine living here and having this view. A bit too savage.
The bay area of Brickell, facing the bridges that connect to smaller islands like Key Biscayne. It's a quiet little residential promenade, just behind our AirBnB.
So glad we found this place. Tucked away little boutique low rise apartments right next to two supermarkets, train station and the business district. Away from hustle bustle of downtown - such hospitality at SOMA apartments. This is our welcome pack when we moved in. Beach towels, cooler bag, sunscreen, lip balm, gym bottles... completely stole our hearts on day one.
Laps and plenty of sun. Love the lifestyle this place affords.
Whole Foods, Downtown Miami
The cafe at whole foods, before the lunch crowd kicks in.
Calm place to be.
Our first chinese grocery stop since arriving in Miami. One of the things we find, is that some of these shops are like glorified storehouses with stacks and piles of asian packaged food. From sauces to marinades to dried produce and grain. Some of them have been tucked inside these shops for a long time. We bought a whole carton worth of goods, only to get home and find some of the sauces way past their expiry. By one year in some instances.
Shake Shack at South Beach
Our first taste of the famed American chain since setting foot on the east coast. To be honest it was good but we prefer Five Guys. Shake Shack burgers are smaller and more expensive overall. We prefer to good ol' greasy humble and simple burgers from Five Guys.
Apple Store at South Beach
Lincoln Road Mall is a closed strip for foot traffic. Flanked by cafes, restaurants and high end brands, this place is a major centre to Miami Beach.
Our first chinese dinner.
The beautiful white sandy beaches of Miami on a quieter day.
Miami Dade County, Clerk of Courts
These halls carry special meaning for me and my partner.
Miami Corporate Run
Took part in a 3 miles run through the city of Miami. Best way to experience the life and culture. Closed roads and massive carnival vibe. Even if I am not much of a runner, this was such an experience. My legs were killing me by the end of it but it was so worth it.
On my 6 week break from Miami to apply for a long term visa, I took a day trip layover in London - 9 hours to see the city, grab a coffee, a bite and catch up with some old friends.
Feeling so at home at a third-wave coffeeshop looking like any other Melbourne third wave cafe.
A layover in London is a bit like a tourist speed dating. Take lots of pictures, see lots of sights, do lots of walking, covering as much as possible.
Back in Miami
6 weeks later, back in Miami. Checking out the farmers market in Midtown Miami. We spend a lot of weekends here in Wynwood. Lovely place with shops and eats and super chill.
The Metro Rail
The metro rail system is one of the most common transport system we use to get around Miami, ploughing through mostly South Miami where we catch our weekend movies and checkout eateries along the rail line.
Chilling by the pool deck
Some days, I take my laptop and work by the pool between taking laps in the pool.
Stopping by for a toilet, stretch and photo break on our roadtrip to Fort Lauderdale with our lovely neigbours who lives upstairs from us. It's a nice change to ride in a car and go places where public transport can't take you.
Las Olas Beach, Fort Lauderdale
Chilling at Whole Foods cafe after browsing the supermarket aisles.
Organic and Sustainable
One of my favourite supermarkets that is Whole Foods.
Swan by the pool
One of the great things about living in a community like our apartment is that the management does these little things to make your stay so pleasant. Like occasionally, they'd throw in a massive swan float in the pool for residents to use. Another time it was massive donut floats and floating sunbeds. They really know how to do lifestyle well.
Waiting for the train
There is a charm about trains. I love these old industrial steel caged cabins. Even if they are noisy and smell of burnt rubber and toxic metal waste. In Miami, they also come with shady characters, drugged out individuals and some passing out on corners of the train or platform. It does feel a little unnerving commuting on the metro rail. But every so often you see police officers patrolling every nook of these stations and cabins. Crime is rampant in Miami and news reports of shootings happen every other day on the streets. The presence of officers on board really makes each ride a lot more comfortable and safe knowing that local law enforcement is doing their job. And doing it very well.
One of the annoying things about our community is that the fire alarm is very sensitive and trips easily. The result is the deafening alarm wailing through every apartment and breezeway until the fire trucks arrive. There hasn't been a real fire but there have been an average of 1 - 2 false alarms going off. It does help that the fire station is just one street down from our apartment block. They usually arrive within minutes. Tonight was one of those where everyone evacuated to the street only to realise it was another false alarm. It is better to be safe than sorry and we are glad there is a high level of emergency response here. Thank you for doing your job and watching over us.
Soaking Up The Sun
One of those days where the pool is so inviting.
Our friends' cat living the life in Miami Lakes.
Looking out into the backyard that is a massive lake! Such a treat to be invited to our friends' place. We got to experience a little of local life.
Food Trucks at Miami Flea
Miami Flea is an outdoor event that happens once a month featuring arts, craft, live music and FOOD TRUCKS! My favourite is The Salty Donut. They have some really ingenious sweets and as you can see a hot favourite amongst locals.
An ice cream parlour food truck, serving ice cream sandwiches.
On some nights, we hang out with our friends at the clubhouse on the roof top, do dinner, play a game of pool or cuban dominoes.
Rooftop Live Music
Pop up live music above an apartment building as the sun sets.
